چکیده
In the first part of this investigation 33 subjects were investigated. Ten (nos. I to 10) had previously undergone operations for peptic ulcer (eight Billroth II and one Billroth I partial gastrectomies and one gastroenterostomy) (Table I). Seven patients (nos. 11 to 17) suffered from idiopathic steatorrhoea (Table II). Eight patients (nos. 18 to 25) had pernicious anaemia, untreated or treated (Table III). Eight patients (nos. 26 to 33) had miscellaneous disorders (Table IV). Of these, three had x-raynegative dyspepsia and of the remaining five, one had a gastric ulcer, one duodenal ulcer, one megaloblastic anaemia of intestinal origin, one diarrhoea of unknown cause, and one jejunal diverticulosis. By choosing these groups of patients we hoped to investigate those with intact stomachs and therefore providing a wide range of gastric pH (23 patients) and those in whom direct continuity between the stomach and jejunum had been established by operation (10 patients).

متن کاملOmeprazole induces altered bile acid metabolism.
BACKGROUND It has been reported that the acidity of gastric contents could be an important factor in regulating jejunal flora. AIMS To investigate the effects of omeprazole induced changes in gastric pH on jejunal flora and bile acid metabolism. METHODS Twenty one patients with gastric ulcer and 19 healthy volunteers were studied. Deconjugation of bile acids was detected using a bile acid b...
متن کاملGastric flora of fasting healthy subjects and its relations to pH.
Samples of gastric juice were collected from 60 fasting subjects ranging from 10 to 80 years of age. Seventy-six per cent of the gastric cultures were positive. Natural gastric flora were classified into those organisms found frequently and sporadically. Effect of gastric pH on bacterial growth has indicated an increase in the number of samples showing growth above pH 5. Yeast was the only orga...
متن کاملThe Effect of Two Different Doses of Omeprazole on Gastric pH in I.C.U. Patients
About 1.5-6 % of the patients with gastric and duodenal erosions admitted to I.C.U. are prone to gastrointestinal (G.I.) bleeding with its ensuing complications. Routine prophylaxis with H2-blockers and anti-acid has been used in these high risk patients for decades. In this study we evaluated the effect of P.O omeprazole, a potent acid inhibitor with prolong effects on gastric pH. Patients wit...
متن کاملPouchitis: result of microbial imbalance?
To elucidate the role of microbiological factors in pouchitis, this study investigated the composition of ileal reservoir microflora, the mucus degrading capacity of bacterial enzymes as well as the pH and the proteolytic activity of pouch effluent. Stool samples were collected from five patients with pouchitis and nine patients without pouchitis. The flora of patients with pouchitis had an inc...
